Wood Floor Refinishing DIY -- It's Easier than You Think!
If you've got hardwood floors, then you already know how beautiful they are. Wood floors are also durable, and can last for generations. However, what's a homeowner to do if they're dealing with wood floors that are worn or scratched?
How about refinishing? Wood floor refinishing is a diy (do it yourself) project that an ambitious homeowner can tackle in no time. If this sounds like something you're interested in, let's take a look at the supplies you'll need and the steps involved.
Supplies:
Belt sander
Detail sander
Hammer
Pry bar
Hearing protection
Eye protection
Masking tape
Plastic sheeting
Sandpaper
Interior Stain
Sealant
Preparation is essential to a good refinishing job. Always take everything out of the room that's being worked on, including wall hangings and window treatments. Cover every light fixture with a trash bag and some tape, and cover all outlets with tape. Then, give your floor a good vacuuming.
Now you're ready to begin sanding. Using a professional grade sander, work quickly and don't overdo it. You'll need to sand several times, with varying degrees of grit. Start with 120 grit, and work your way to 220 grit.
You'll want to vacuum your floor thoroughly to remove all remnants of sanding. Then, after you're sure your floors are clean and smooth, it's time for the stain. You can choose to simply apply a clear sealant to your floor, or use a stain in the shade of your choice. Check package directions for application instructions and drying time. Always let each coat dry thoroughly before applying another. When all your coats are dry, buff your floor for the ultimate finish. And that's it!
After you're certain that your refinished floor is completely dry, it's time to uncover all fixtures and move the furniture, wall hangings, and window coverings in. Now you can marvel at your beautiful hardwood floor! Your guests will think that you got a new floor -- and your home will automatically increase in value. Wood floor refinishing is a DIY project that you'll be proud of for years to come!
